How to write your English shop name in Kannada

For a brand name, write how it sounds in Kannada script (transliteration). Don't translate the meaning, or your shop ends up with a different name.

Third Wave Coffeeಥರ್ಡ್ ವೇವ್ ಕಾಫಿ
Priya Bakeryಪ್ರಿಯಾ ಬೇಕರಿ
Le Glam Studioಲೆ ಗ್ಲ್ಯಾಮ್ ಸ್ಟುಡಿಯೋ
Million Flowersಮಿಲಿಯನ್ ಫ್ಲವರ್ಸ್
Ladies Collectionsಲೇಡೀಸ್ ಕಲೆಕ್ಷನ್ಸ್

Rules of thumb

  1. Sound, not meaning. "Million Flowers" stays ಮಿಲಿಯನ್ ಫ್ಲವರ್ಸ್, not a Kannada word for flowers.
  2. Common shop words (Bakery, Stores, Studio, Cafe) are usually written as they sound too: ಬೇಕರಿ, ಸ್ಟೋರ್ಸ್, ಸ್ಟುಡಿಯೋ, ಕೆಫೆ.
  3. Watch the tricky sounds: "f" (ಫ), "z" (ಝ / ಜ), "a" in "glam" (ಗ್ಲ್ಯಾ). Unusual names need the owner's pronunciation.
  4. Get it proofread. A wrong conjunct letter is very visible on a 6-foot board.

Questions

Can I use Google Translate?

For brand names, no. It translates meaning. Use transliteration, then have a Kannada speaker check it.

My name has no Kannada sound for "z" or "f". What then?

Kannada writes these with ಝ/ಜ and ಫ. We match how you pronounce it.
